Charles Brackett

Charles Brackett (born November 26, 1892 in Saratoga Springs , New York , † March 9, 1969 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter .

Life

Brackett began his writing career as a theater critic. In 1925 he replaced Herman Mankiewicz as a theater critic for The New Yorker magazine , who, like him, went to Hollywood in 1929 as a screenwriter. Brackett had his greatest success as co-writer with Billy Wilder , with whom he worked on 13 films since the 1930s .

Charles Brackett was nominated eight times for an Oscar and received the trophy three times. First in 1946 for The Lost Weekend , then in 1951 for Twilight Boulevard and 1954 for The Sinking of the Titanic . He also received an honorary Oscar in 1958 .
