action

Ellen McNulty gives up her hamburger stand in New Jersey after the bank terminates its loan and visits her son Val in Ohio . Val recently married a celebrity Maggie. To help Maggie organize a dinner party, Val has the employment office send a cook. When Ellen arrives, Maggie thinks she is the cook. Ellen doesn't clarify the matter so as not to embarrass Maggie. After the party, Val follows her home and persuades her to move in with them.

The next morning, Ellen arrives with her things. Maggie explains to Val that she does not want to clear up the mistake because a mother-in-law in the house would only cause friction. Val is reluctant to agree to the charade. Maggie's mother Fran comes to live with them too. She is a snob and disapproves of both Val and Ellen.

Maggie and Val lend Ellen's services to the Kalinger family, whose company Val works for, for a party. Guests of honor are Mr. and Mrs. Williamson, who own a company in Maryland that works with the Kalingers company to get a major order. Ellen takes care of a sick Mr. Kalinger and discovers that his son Kalinger Junior has previously courted Maggie. Kalinger Senior also invites Val and Maggie to the party. At the party, Maggie is insulted by Mrs. Williamson and storms out. Fearing Mrs. Williamson's influence, Val forces Maggie on a phone call to apologize. She does this involuntarily.

The next morning, Val and Maggie meet and agree that they were both wrong. Later that day, Ellen's friends stop by and ask for "Mrs. McNulty". This is how Maggie learns that Ellen is Val's mother. Maggie is mad at Val for hiding his mother's identity from her. She and her mother go to a hotel. Maggie later confronts Val with the fact in his office. Val tries to explain himself, but Maggie doesn't listen to him. She tells him that he has become a snob and that she will be moving to Mexico, where the divorce was easier to get back then.

Mr. Kalinger decides to bring Val and Maggie back together. He persuades Maggie to come to the hotel bar with him to say goodbye, knowing that Val will be there for a party. When Maggie sees Val, she scolds him again for trying to hide his mother and leaves the bar. Val leaves the party and rushes off to bring his mother back to the party. Maggie, who has come back to the bar, witnesses when Val confidently introduces his mother to Mrs. Williamson, even though the snobbish Mrs. Williamson, who previously wanted to hire Val for her company, doesn't believe in her. Kalinger Junior also finds Ellen horrific, but Kalinger Senior is enthusiastic and decides to marry her.
