Jan Sterling
Jan Sterling (born April 3, 1921 in New York City as Jane Sterling Adriance , † March 26, 2004 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American theater and film actress .
biography
Jan Sterling had already worked as an actress in the theater and in film for a number of years when her breakthrough came in 1948. In addition to Jane Wyman , Lew Ayres and Agnes Moorehead , she played a supporting role in Silent Lips , the multi -Oscar-nominated work by Jean Negulesco . Sterling was able to convince both the critics and the audience. In 1950 she played again with Agnes Moorehead and Eleanor Parker and Hope Emerson an inmate in a women's prison in the drama Women's Prison . In the same year Jan Sterling married her colleague Paul Douglas , making him the actor's fifth wife. The marriage, which lasted until Douglas' death in 1959, resulted in a son.
In 1951, Sterling was cast by Billy Wilder in his film Reporters of Satan . In addition to Kirk Douglas , she plays the wife of the failed businessman Leo Minosa in the much-acclaimed drama, whose rescue is cannibalized by the press. Mrs. Minosa also benefits from the stir about her husband, but like everyone involved she has to cope with her feelings of guilt when he finally dies. She met her colleague Jane Wyman again in 1953, when they both stood in front of the camera with Nancy Olson in the film A Heart of Gold by director Robert Wise . Together with John Wayne , Jan Sterling starred in William A. Wellman's successful disaster film in 1954. It always becomes a day in which an airplane disaster was first discussed.
The actress starred alongside Joan Crawford in The House on the Beach in 1955 . The film was supposed to get Crawford out of her career lows, but received little approval from the critics. The audience, however, was convinced of the actors' achievements and made the film a financial success. In the same year Jan Sterling played alongside Humphrey Bogart and Rod Steiger in Schmutziger Laurel . The film, directed by Mark Robson was at the International Film Festival in Cannes shown and competed there for the Golden Palm .
In the 1984 film adaptation of George Orwell's novel , the actress played Julia, alongside Edmond O'Brien as Winston Smith. However, the 1956 film adaptation by Michael Anderson was consistently rated poorly by the critics. Since the early 1960s, she only appeared occasionally in films. Jan Sterling died at the age of 83 on March 26, 2004 in Woodland Hills, California.
Awards
For her convincing portrayal in Reporters of Satan , Jan Sterling was awarded the National Board of Review's 1951 award for Best Actress .
The actress received a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955 for her performance in It Goes Again and was nominated for an Academy Award in the same category . Here, however, she could not prevail against Eva Marie Saint , who received the trophy for The Fist in the Neck .
