Winner and nominee for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Supporting Actress (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture) , which honors the most outstanding acting performances of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1944.

The prizewinner was later awarded the Oscar 35 times, most recently in 2020 with the award of the prize to Laura Dern ( Marriage Story ) . In 1953, 1959, 1974 and 1976, the award-winning film role was not considered for the Oscar. In 2009, British actress Kate Winslet was later awarded the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in The Reader .

American actresses have won the Acting Award 60 times (including actresses with dual citizenship such as Lilia Skala or Ann-Margret ), followed by their colleagues from Great Britain (11 wins). Actresses from German-speaking countries competed for the award five times in the past, each for their work in English-language film productions: 1962 Lotte Lenya for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone , 1964 Liselotte Pulver for state affairs , 1964 and 1978 Lilia Skala for Lilien auf dem Felde or Der Tanzpalast and in 1977 Marthe Keller for Der Marathon-Mann . The only actress to date to have been nominated for a non-English-speaking role was Italian Valentina Cortese in 1974 for the French-language production The American Night .
