action

Max lives isolated from his surroundings. Grown very tall for his age, with no friends and unwilling to find them, he is considered retarded. It doesn't really help that his father is in jail for the murder of his mother and that the boy is growing up with his mother's parents. Even his grandparents are not convinced of Max's character or abilities.

Then the handicapped Kevin of the same age moves into the house next door, a little genius whose body is no longer growing and who describes himself as a "freak". He takes Max into his world of sagas and legends about King Arthur . In it both form a unit, the guiding brain and the executing body, which also help them in the confrontations with the gangs of the environment. The two are now on the road together as a "strong freak" with Kevin sitting on Max's shoulders. With Kevin as their head and Max as their body, they want to fight injustices that they encounter.

When they want to help a stolen woman, she turns out to be an acquaintance of Max's father. Meanwhile he is released from prison and kidnaps Max. Kevin rushes to the rescue and together they can put the violent father to flight. Max finally finds recognition from his grandparents.

The two are celebrated as heroes, but Kevin dies the following night. He had previously told Max that scientists would develop a high-tech body for him and use it to heal him, but that was just a fictional story by Freak. But the research center can't help him and Max is devastated that he has lost his best friend.

Then Max begins to write down their adventures in a book that Kevin had given him earlier.
