Freak is a teenage novel by Rodman Philbrick published in 1993 .

Brief content

First-person narrator is 12-year-old Maxwell Kane, who lives with his grandparents (Grim and Gram) after his mother was killed by his father and he ended up in prison. The boy, much taller than his peers, considers himself stupid. Those around him are afraid of him, because he reacts aggressively and violently to their supposed and then actual rejection. However, when the short Kevin moves in with his mother across the street, a friendship develops between the two. Max calls Kevin Freak and the highly intelligent Kevin is able to involve Max in a fantasy world around King Arthur, computers and robots. Both realize that they are together freak, the strong one .

The novel depicts the year of their friendship and culminates in the fact that both are confronted with their problems in an existential way. In the end, Kevin succumbs to a long-standing illness on his 13th birthday.

In 1998 a high-class adaptation was made under the original title The Mighty . Sharon Stone received a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Supporting Role” for portraying Gwen .

The sequel, Max the Mighty , in which Maxwell plays the leading role, was released in 1998 in English.
