Paul Cézanne : The Bay of Marseille as seen from L'Estaque , around 1885

L'Estaque is a former fishing village, located on the de Rade Marseille , the 1946 as part of the 16th arrondissement of Marseille was incorporated. The Côte Bleue begins west of L'Estaque . The chain of hills Chaîne de l'Estaque gave the place its name.

The artist village

The place has been visited by Georges Braque , Paul Cézanne , Raoul Dufy and many other visual artists and has inspired the artists. Braque's 1908 painting, Houses in L'Estaque , first evoked the concept of Cubism .

A little of this former artists' village and its past can still be felt today: the inhabitants differ from the other Marseillais and make no secret of the fact that they do not feel part of the city, which is about 30 minutes away by bus. (Line 35 - from La Joliette , past the new port, from which the large ferries to Corsica and Africa also leave).

In the 1990s, Robert Guédiguian brought L'Estaque into the public eye with his film Marius and Jeannette / Marius et Jeannette . Guédiguian is a native ( Marseillais ), with an Armenian father and German mother. Like the French film, his film shows the everyday life of the so-called little people of L'Estaque in an entertaining manner and with a high level of quality, settled in the microcosm of the surroundings of these nested little houses typical of L'Estaque.
