Chastain doesn't like to talk about her childhood in public; she describes her relationship with her father as distant. According to her own statement, no father is named on her birth certificate. Chastain had a younger sister from Monasterio's relationship with her mother, who, however, committed suicide in 2003 after years of drug abuse.

Chastain was raised after her parents separated from her stepfather, a firefighter. She says she is very grateful to her stepfather for being “one of the greatest people” she knows and for being the first to make her feel safe.

Chastain struggled at school and did not graduate from high school . As a child, however, she found pleasure in acting by attending a performance of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with David Cassidy in the title role. At the same time she devoted herself to dance and joined a dance troupe at the age of 13. She later began acting, using her mother's maiden name as her stage name and henceforth performing as Jessica Chastain. Her family had no show business connections and therefore largely withheld information about her film and television careers.

Chastain says of your school days: “I thought I was just not an intelligent person because my grades were so bad. There are kids out there who aren't good at school - I hope they never think they're stupid. It just depends on finding out where your interests lie and what you're good at. "
