Michelle Ingrid Williams (born September 9, 1980 in Kalispell , Montana ) is an American actress . Since the mid-1990s she has appeared in over 40 film and television productions. She gained international fame through her role as Jen Lindley in the series Dawson's Creek (1998-2003). Williams has received four Oscar nominations to date and won the Golden Globe Award for her leading role in the feature film My Week with Marilyn (2011).

Life

Career

Williams came into contact with the theater early on. She finished her schooling prematurely and moved to Los Angeles , where she was hired from 1993 for a few supporting roles in television series such as Baywatch , A strong family or Listen, who hammers there.

In 1994 Williams played her first major movie role in the remake of the classic Lassie . Before her breakthrough in the youth series Dawson’s Creek , she made films such as Species and A Thousand Morning .

Although she also shot " Popcornkino ", which includes her role in Halloween H20 , Williams is now more often seen in independent productions such as Station Agent or Wim Wenders ' Land of Plenty . She received an award from the Toronto Film Critics Association and her third nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for her portrayal in the drama Wendy and Lucy . She also starred in the episode film Women Love Women , which is about lesbian relationships, and in particular in Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee . She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for the role in the movie about two homosexual cowboys in the 1960s .

In 2010, Williams starred in Martin Scorsese's literary adaptation Shutter Island, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio . The thriller was shown out of competition at the 2010 Berlinale. Williams received her second Oscar and Golden Globe nomination in 2011 for the lead role in the relationship drama Blue Valentine (2010).

In 2011 she starred as Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe in the biopic drama My Week with Marilyn . She received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination in 2012 for her performance . On March 7, 2013, two new films with Williams were released in German cinemas, the fantasy film Die fantastische Welt von Oz and the tragic comedy Take This Waltz, which was completed in 2011 . For the single A Million Dreams she received a platinum record in Great Britain and a platinum award in the USA.

In 2019, Williams took on the role of Gwen Verdon in the multi-part television series Fosse / Verdon alongside Sam Rockwell . She was also involved in the project as executive producer . For her portrayal, Williams received an Emmy in 2019 for best actress in a miniseries or television movie.

Private life

During the filming of Brokeback Mountain , Williams and lead actor Heath Ledger , who played her first husband in it, became a couple. They have a daughter (* 2005) together. The couple separated in September 2007. On January 22, 2008, Ledger died of drug poisoning. Due to the bereavement, the shooting of Williams' new projects was initially put on hold.

From mid-2012 to February 2013, Williams was in a relationship with actor Jason Segel .

In 2018 Williams married the American songwriter Phil Elverum.
