The 2011 Academy Awards took place on February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles . It was the 83rd presentation of the Academy Award since it was first presented in 1929 . In the year of the Academy Awards, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films from 2010 .

The Oscar nominations were announced on January 25, 2011 in Beverly Hills. The favorite was the historical film The King's Speech by Tom Hooper - the British production was considered in a total of twelve categories and won four awards (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor - Colin Firth , Best Original Screenplay). Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Inception was also awarded four times in technical categories . Ethan and Joel Coen's western remake, True Grit , received ten nominations, but couldn't win any of the coveted statuettes. David Fincher's The Social Network had dominated the American film awards season for a long time. The drama about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg won three awards (best adapted screenplay, best film music, best editing).

In addition to Colin Firth, the favorites for the awards for the best actors were the Golden Globe award winners Natalie Portman ( Black Swan ) , Christian Bale and Melissa Leo (both for The Fighter ), who also won the Oscars.

German filmmakers were represented in the secondary categories, but did not receive any prizes. Jakob Schuh and Max Lang had found consideration for The Gruffalo in the category Best Animated Short Film , but had to admit defeat to the Australian entry The Lost Thing . Film composer Hans Zimmer was nominated for the ninth time for the film award for his work on Inception . Stephan Trojansky from Munich competed with Hereafter - Life afterwards for the Oscar for the best special effects, which was awarded to the Inception team .

Award dates

The nominations were announced on January 25, 2011 by actress and last year's Oscar winner Mo'Nique ( Precious ) and AMPAS President Tom Sherak . The actual award ceremony traditionally took place a month later. As in previous years, the awards for science and technology were presented in a specially designed gala on February 12, 2011.

Moderation

The two actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosted the gala .

Innovations

After already 2010 ten instead of the previous five films in the category film Best were nominated who had Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced to introduce also in two other categories innovations.

  • The number of films that can be nominated in the Best Visual Effects category has been increased from three to five. As a result, films that are not customary in the genre (i.e. films that do not come from the field of fantasy or science fiction ) should also be taken into account at the Academy Awards.
  • The minimum length of a film that can be nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category has been reduced from 70 minutes to 40 minutes. At the same time, only those films should be included in this category that are animated picture by picture, regardless of whether they are drawn by hand or generated on the computer. Films in which motion capture and therefore actors were used, such as the 2006 film Monster House , should then only be nominated and awarded in the Best Film category.

Submissions for the category "Best Foreign Language Film"

Each country could propose a film for the Best Foreign Language Film category . The nomination period ended on October 1, 2010. A total of 66 films were submitted, including productions from Ethiopia and Greenland for the first time . A selection committee selected the five Oscar nominations from these proposals.

Germany sent Feo Aladağ's drama Die Fremde into the running. Austria's candidate was the Austrian-Italian co-production La Pivellina . Switzerland had nominated the French-language film La petite chambre by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond. In addition, the Berlinale winner Bal - Honey for Turkey and the Thai film Uncle Boonmee Remembers His Past Lives , the winner of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival , were proposed.

On January 19, 2011, AMPAS announced a shortlist of nine films that could be nominated for an Oscar. In contrast to the Golden Globe Awards , which are often interpreted as a barometer of the mood for the Oscars, the contributions from France , Italy and Russia were not taken into account. Kokuhaku (Japan, director: Tetsuya Nakashima ), And then the rain (Spain, director: Icíar Bollaín ), Beloved Life (South Africa, director: Oliver Schmitz ) and There are no feelings in space (Sweden, director: Andreas Öhman ) were added the five later nominated productions on the shortlist.
