Justin Randall Timberlake (born January 31, 1981 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American pop musician , composer , presenter and actor . He became known to a wide audience in the late 1990s as a member and front singer of the boy group * NSYNC . With the release of his albums Justified and FutureSex / LoveSounds , Timberlake developed into a commercially successful and multi-award winning solo artist in the 2000s . His comeback in 2013 with the albums The 20/20 Experience and The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 was also a worldwide success.

Childhood and Adolescence: from Mickey Mouse Club to * NSYNC

Justin Timberlake was born in Memphis to Charles Randall Timberlake and his first wife, Lynn Harless. His father was a choirmaster of a Baptist congregation and gave Justin his enthusiasm for singing. Timberlake grew up in the small community of Shelby Forest near Memphis and has two half-brothers from his father's second marriage.

Timberlake first appeared on the Star Search talent show , but did not emerge as the winner. He started his career in the early 1990s as a member of the TV show Mickey Mouse Club , where he acted as a presenter, singer and actor alongside later show business greats such as Christina Aguilera , Britney Spears , actress Keri Russell and bandmate JC Chasez .

From autumn 1996 he became known as the lead singer of the boy group * NSYNC . Five albums and twelve singles followed before the band decided to break up in the spring of 2002 despite continued success.

Solo career

2002–2005: First album and Nipplegate

In November 2002 Timberlake released his first solo album Justified . Even more than previous recordings, the record was characterized by its strong influence from R&B and hip-hop , triggered by the collaboration with The Neptunes and Timbaland . The single releases Like I Love You , Cry Me A River , Rock Your Body and Señorita were successful worldwide and helped him to win two Grammys in the categories Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance . To date, Justified has been sold more than seven million times worldwide.

In February 2004 he sparked an American-wide scandal with the Nipplegate affair, by accidentally exposing his right breast in front of the camera during an appearance at the Super Bowl of his duo partner Janet Jackson . Jackson and Timberlake denied any guilt, the circumstances remained unresolved.

At the same time, Timberlake tried his hand at acting. As early as 2004 he directed both the video thriller Edison alongside Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman and the drama Alpha Dog (2006), which artistically deals with events about the criminal Jesse James Hollywood .

2006–2012: Successful time with FutureSex / LoveSounds and further acting

In September 2006 Justin Timberlake released his second solo album FutureSex / LoveSounds . The record, produced by Timbaland and will.i.am , entered the album charts in the United States, Great Britain , Canada and Australia as well as in eleven other countries, but also reached number 1 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland after the first Week the top 5. The first single, SexyBack , which was released in advance , developed into a similar success and climbed to the top of the sales and airplay charts in the US Billboard charts, in Great Britain and Germany. The second release, My Love , a collaboration with rapper TI , also made it to number 1 in the US charts. The song What Goes Around… /… Comes Around was first released in February 2007 as the third single . This song also reached the top ten in various states.

On October 17, 2006 Justin Timberlake presented his first own fashion collection called William Rast in Los Angeles . Together with his childhood friend Trace Ayala, he developed clothes for women and men under the motto Street Sexy .

On November 2, 2006, he led as moderator by the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 in the Danish Copenhagen .

On December 16, 2006 in the NBC telecast Saturday Night Live to be together with Andy Samberg sung parody song Dick in a Box premiered. The video was then made available by NBC on YouTube in uncensored text and became one of the most viewed videos on the Internet in the course of 2007. The track won a Creative Arts Primetime Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Music and Lyrics . In 2009 and 2011 he was honored with further Emmys for his guest appearances on Saturday Night Live .

In May 2007, Timberlake founded the record label Tennman Records , which is a joint venture with Interscope Records . He acts there as Chairman and CEO . The only currently known artist is Esmée Denters , who became known through YouTube .

In June 2011, Justin Timberlake acquired shares in the social media platform MySpace through Specific Media .

Since 2013: Comeback with The 20/20 Experience

In January 2013 Timberlake announced that they would be making music again. His album The 20/20 Experience was released in Germany on March 15, 2013. Timberlake caused the greatest possible publicity with appearances at high-profile events, in New Orleans at the Super Bowl party, at the opening of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles and at the BRIT Awards in London . On February 23, 2013 he made an acclaimed guest appearance in Friedrichshafen on Wetten, dass ..? the song mirrors before, before he sat down on the couch and then bet with Elvis - Imitation could inspire the audience.

On September 27th the album The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 was released , which was created in the same recording cycle as Timberlake's last studio album. The two-part project was sold as The Complete Experience as a compilation album . In July the pre- single Take Back the Night was released before TKO was released as the second single in September . In February, the third single, Not A Bad Thing, was released . With the release of the second part of the album, the tour dates in Germany were also confirmed. After six days, the first concert in Cologne in the Lanxess Arena was sold out, and due to the high demand, an additional concert there was confirmed.

The song Can't Stop the Feeling! from 2016 earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 2017 . In the same year he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

In 2018 his album Man of the Woods was released , with which he reached number 1 in the USA and Germany when he entered the chart. However, the album received very mixed reactions from fans and critics, and although it produced two top ten singles, Timberlake could not build on earlier successes with Man of the Woods .

On February 4, 2018, he appeared again in the Super Bowl LII halftime show , which was also partially criticized.

Private

From 1998 to 2002 Timberlake was in a relationship with Britney Spears , from 2003 to 2007 he lived with Cameron Diaz . He has been in a relationship with Jessica Biel since 2007 , whom he married on October 19, 2012. Their son was born in April 2015.

In a 2008 interview, Timberlake confessed that he had ADHD and some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

On April 2, 2011, Timberlake won a Kids Choice Award in the Big Help category for helping several poor children and building an environmentally friendly golf course . Timberlake also sponsors the Las Vegas golf tournament each year for the benefit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children .

Timberlake's name appeared in connection with the so-called Paradise Papers , which expose tax avoidance tactics of the super-rich.
