action

Many years ago the trolls - a people who cuddle, sing and dance all the time, have incredibly useful hair and are infinitely happy - still lived in the troll tree by the mountains. The mountains are much bigger, they can't cuddle, sing or dance and are always unhappy. They can only be happy when they eat a troll. Once a year is troll day. Then all the mountains come to the troll tree and eat a troll. When the little prince Gristle is supposed to eat the happiest troll, Princess Poppy, who was still a baby troll at the time, the trolls and King Peppy, Poppy's father, flee through an escape tunnel.

Twenty years later, the trolls have built a new life for themselves and Poppy is the star and they all sing, dance and cuddle except for one troll, Branch, who is gray. When they want to throw a huge, loud and colorful party, he warns them that it might attract the attention of the mountains, but they don't listen and he hides in his bunker. They are ambushed by the Bergen boss and she takes Poppy's friends Creek, DJ Suki, Biggie, Satin and Silk, Guy Diamond and Smidge with her. Poppy brings the rest of the trolls into Branch's bunker, forcing him to go with her to Bergenstadt and save her friends.

On the way there, they encounter Guy Cloud, a rather strange cloud that drives Branch insane. By chance he leads them through the old escape tunnel into the dead troll tree and they see the unfortunate mountains. As soon as they are in the castle, they have to watch how the meanwhile King eats Gristle Creek in front of the others. Chef, who has resumed, orders Bridget, a kitchen helper, to look after the trolls in her room. Poppy and Branch follow her and free the others, but are noticed. They find out that Bridget has long been in love with King Gristle. The trolls promise to arrange a date for her with him, and Bridget brings her close enough to King Gristle to save Creek. Branch tells Poppy that the reason he doesn't sing is because he used it to kill his grandma, who was eaten by a mountain. Then he went gray with grief and never sang a note again, even though he has a beautiful voice. On the date, they fake Bridget's hair and turn her into "Lady Glitter-Sparkle". King Gristle immediately falls in love with her, and the trolls find out that he didn't eat Creek, just kept it in his locket. Then, just before they can kiss, Boss comes and interrupts them. When King Gristle registers "Lady Glitzer-Funkel" as his partner on Troll Day, the boss orders the kitchen maid Bridget to work even more on Troll Day so that she definitely doesn't have the time to come as Lady Glitzer-Funkel. Bridget throws herself howling on her bed and the trolls go and get King Gristle's locket. When they open it, it's empty and they are caught by the boss. They discover that Creek has betrayed them to the mountains and wants to show them the way to the other trolls.

When the whole troll tribe sits in the pot and is brought to dinner by Bridget, everyone, including Poppy, turns gray with grief. Branch sings True Colors to cheer Poppy and everyone gets colored, including him. Bridget frees her and goes to dinner with the empty pot. Once there, she gets a terrible abuse, but suddenly the trolls fly through the window and sit on her head. You make the wig and King Gristle recognizes his Lady Glitter-Sparkle. Poppy explains to the mountains that the feeling of happiness is not edible, but is inherent in them and that sometimes you just need help to find it. She looks at Branch. They sing the song Can't Stop the Feeling! and Poppy dances with Branch. They all pull into the troll tree, which suddenly blooms again and the whole city becomes colorful. Poppy is crowned queen by King Peppy, and she and Branch get together.

Chef is thrown out of town with Creek in his pocket. She wants to eat Creek, but then both are eaten by a monster mound.

The magic trolls animated in the film were extremely popular toys in the early 1960s , particularly in the United States. The troll dolls were an invention of the Danish fisherman and wood carver Thomas Dam . The dolls with the long, colorful hair were later marketed particularly successfully by the Hasbro company. In the 1990s, video games and a video show based on the characters followed in merchandising. In 2013 DreamWorks Animation secured the film rights for the Magic Trolls from Dam's descendants.

In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Music , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The statement of reasons for release states: The bright, colorful film is characterized by a cheerful mood and the story is easy to understand even for preschoolers. Very occasionally there are slightly scary moments (e.g. during the kidnapping, or due to the fact that the trolls are to be eaten). However, these scenes are kept short and are sufficiently balanced by numerous cheerful and musical sections.

Trolls also received unrestricted approval in Austria . The reason for the age rating stated: In addition to the simply knitted and therefore easily understandable plot, the rather unspectacular use of 3D technology was ultimately decisive for unrestricted approval.

Reviews

The film was able to convince 88 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of 32 critics in total, as of October 25, 2016).

Owen Gleiberman of Variety says about the film: "Children should love him, but do not let that fool you - each 3D psychedelic inch of the film is a fairy tale for adults."

With regard to the threat to the trolls posed by the mountains, Fritz Göttler of the Süddeutsche Zeitung recognizes references to other cultural transformations: “Fairy tales have something cannibalistic , a touch of anthropophagy , that is what makes them close to horror . The happiness of the trolls also has something totalitarian about it , it embraces and devours everything. "

Gross profit

In Russia, the film reached number 1 in the box office after its release. The film's worldwide revenues are currently $ 306.8 million. So far, the film has had 1,053,512 visitors in Germany.
