Russell Edward Brand (born June 4, 1975 in Grays , England ) is a British comedian, presenter, singer, actor, author and political activist.

Career

Brand's acting career began in 1994 when he appeared in a number of episodes on the British children's broadcaster CBBC's Mud . He later started working as a stand-up comedian. In 2000 he was hired by MTV , where he hosted a show until September 2001. He was released when he moved to the September 11 attacks in an Osama bin Laden nose cone appeared at work. He then lost a job at the radio station Xfm after reading from pornographic writings during a broadcast. From 2004 he moderated Big Brother accompanying programs for the digital channel E4 .

In 2006 he was named Best Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards for his stand-up program . In the same year he hosted the NME Awards . He got his own short-lived talk show on Channel 4 , The Russell Brand Show . From November 2006 he could be heard on the BBC radio program.

Brand was one of the presenters of the Live Earth concerts in London in 2007 . In the same year he published the autobiographical book My Booky Wook , in which he wrote, among other things, about his heroin addiction and which became a bestseller. In 2008 he stepped up his career in the United States : He was in the Hollywood comedy Never Again Sex With Your Ex , hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles , where he was named by the American President George W. Bush when "retarded cowboy" caught attention, and he held a one-hour stand-up special on Comedy Central . In 2009 he again hosted the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New York .

He quit the BBC in October 2008 after appearing together with Jonathan Ross on Brand's radio show caused public outrage. Brand and Ross had left actor Andrew Sachs , with whom a telephone interview had been arranged, several messages on the answering machine , in which they talked about, among other things, Brand's sexual relationship with Sachs' granddaughter Georgina Baillie, which, thanks to extensive coverage by the British media, 42,000 Generated complaints to the BBC.

Since 2009, Brand was in a relationship with the US singer Katy Perry . They were married on October 23, 2010 in Rajasthan, India . On December 30, 2011, Brand announced the divorce. The official reason for separation was "irreconcilable differences of opinion".

According to his own statement, Brand has not eaten meat since he was 14 and was completely vegetarian. Brand has been vegan since October 2011.

Brand practices Transcendental Meditation (TM) and Yoga . TM is an important part of his life ("Through Transcendental Meditation I feel the bliss of the divine twice a day ..... I connect to a limitless consciousness that has no noticeable relationship to my thoughts, fears or desires."), Why he campaigns for the David Lynch Foundation , which spreads TM in schools or among war veterans, for example.
