Never again sex with your ex (Original title: Forgetting Sarah Marshall ) is an American comedy film directed by Nicholas Stoller from 2008. The main role was played by Jason Segel , who also wrote the screenplay.

action

The composer Peter Bretter provides music for the crime TV series Crime Scene , in which his girlfriend Sarah Marshall plays one of the two leading roles. When she separates from him and confesses that she has already started a relationship with another man, he tries unsuccessfully to get over the separation through sex with other women. Completely dejected, Peter retreats to his house until his stepbrother Brian advises him to take a vacation. Peter remembers that Sarah always raved about Hawaii and decides to fly there.

Peter travels to Oahu and hopes that this will help him forget Sarah. On his arrival at the hotel, however, he meets Sarah and her new friend, the well-known rock musician Aldous Snow. At first he purposely pursues them, but even when he tries to avoid them, he runs into them again and again. At the same time, Peter meets the hotel employee Rachel Jansen, who also experienced a disappointment in love and has pity on him. When he goes out with Rachel some evenings, they grow closer. Peter tells Rachel about his work on a puppet musical about Dracula and the everlasting love he's working on. Rachel encourages him to finish this work and tells about how she got to Hawaii and that she never graduated, whereupon Peter advises her to do it. Sarah, meanwhile, begins to doubt her new relationship with Aldous and remembers the good things about her relationship with Peter. The musician finally separates from Sarah when he realizes that they have too different views of life and that she is still attached to Peter. Then Sarah wants to go back to Peter and tries to seduce him. Peter seems to give in after the first resistance, but does not get an erection, even when Sarah stimulates him orally. Peter realizes that his feelings for Sarah are long gone. Since Peter has a guilty conscience, he confesses the incident to Rachel, whereupon she ends the relationship that has just started and asks him not to contact her anymore. He leaves and dedicates himself to completing his musical entitled A taste for love at home . He sends Rachel an invitation. She hesitates at first, but after a discussion with a hotel employee she comes to the premiere. She tells Peter after the performance that she will be staying in the area indefinitely to see some universities. The two admit that they missed each other and eventually start dating again.

During the credits you can see a trailer for the (fictional) new TV series Animal Instincts with Sarah Marshall in the lead role. Here she plays a homicide investigator with the supernatural ability to read the minds of pets.

Reviews

Joe Leydon wrote in Variety magazine on March 17, 2008 that producer Judd Apatow was repeating his “successful” formula for the film The First Time , which combined “uninhibited nonsense” with “loveliness”, slapstick and satire. The director and the scriptwriter would work "perfectly" together. The result could ensure a remarkable result at the box office and in video rental. Leydon also praised the "attractive" camera work and the "witty" costumes.

“Adolescent romantic comedy in which a likable booby gets the impetus to grow up. Its meanness is emphasized with quite coarse humor, whereby the main actor goes to work with well-dosed self-irony. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
