action

Tom Solomon and Violet Barnes live in San Francisco. He works as the assistant chef in a trendy restaurant. Exactly one year after the two met at a New Year's Eve party, Tom proposed to Violet, which she accepted. Tom and Violet start planning the wedding. After Tom and Violet's engagement party, Tom's best friend and work colleague Alex and Violet's sister Suzie unexpectedly spend the night together. Suzie later confesses that she is pregnant with Alex. Before the baby is born, Alex and Suzie get married.

Violet has studied psychology for the last eight years and is now eagerly waiting for the response from universities to which she has applied for a postdoc position. Before she marries Tom and has children, she also wants to have professional success. One day she receives the acceptance from the University of Michigan . When she gives Tom the news, Tom immediately agrees to quit his position as assistant chef and move to Michigan with her. The two want to postpone the planned wedding first.

Finding a suitable position in Michigan is difficult for Tom; he finally finds a job in a fast food establishment. Violet quickly made friends with her new colleagues at the University of Michigan. Because of her successful work, the university receives further funding and Violet's two-year contract is extended. After telling Tom about the extension, he finally tells her that he is very unhappy with his situation in Michigan. In the following months Tom takes refuge in his own world. He grows a beard, goes hunting with some friends and prepares the game himself.

During a joint visit to a pub with work colleagues, Violet is kissed by her boss, Winton. Still very drunk, Violet appears at Tom's restaurant the next morning and tells him that she doesn't want to postpone the wedding any longer and that they should finally get married. Tom agrees. While preparing for the wedding, Violet confesses to Tom that she was kissed by Winton. Tom leaves the engagement party and chases Winton, who showed up at the party, through town. During the course of the night, a work colleague tries to seduce the completely drunk Tom. Tom wakes up the next morning with a frozen toe in the snowy forest.

Tom and Violet decide to split up. She returns the engagement ring to him and he leaves Michigan and moves back to San Francisco. For the next several months, Violet has a relationship with Winton. Tom now works at a San Francisco restaurant run by his friend Alex and has a new relationship too. After Tom is released by Alex, he dares a fresh start and opens a mobile taco shop. Meanwhile, Violet is scheduled to be promoted in Michigan. However, she finds out that she should only get the new position because of her relationship with Winton.

When Violet's grandmother dies, Tom comes to the funeral. There Tom and Violet see each other again for the first time in a long time and get closer emotionally and physically. Tom suggests that Violet come with him to San Francisco for a few days. They get along as well as in earlier days. When Tom wants to take Violet to the airport, Violet proposes to him in the car. Tom admits that he too wanted to propose to her at the airport. However, Violet got ahead of him and organized an impromptu wedding in a park in San Francisco. The two get married on the same day.

criticism

“You don't laugh at Tom and Violet, you don't enjoy idealized supermodels, as in Hollywood's 08/15 romances, instead you laugh at the whole gender chaos. And about yourself. "

- spiegel.de

“The narrative gets out of hand and a shortening of 15 minutes would have done the film good. But at the same time 'Almost Married' is so charming and funny that the lack of stringency hardly has a negative impact in the end. "

- filmstarts.de

“This is the type of film that could turn heads. On the one hand it is often very funny [...] on the other hand it gets pretty absurd somewhere in the middle. [...] Fortunately, everything starts again in the last third, but it's still a shame because the film is way too long anyway. The cast of Jason Segel and Emily Blunt is an absolute stroke of luck [...] "

- Franc exchange

"An unpretentious, charming romance that pleasantly and realistically explores the difficulties of young couples in the area of tension between romance, traditions and the pressures of modern working and living conditions."

On Metacritic, the film achieved a Metascore of 62%, based on 38 reviews. Of the 164 film reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, 63% are positive (as of August 2015).
