action

The married couple Mac and Kelly Radner lived a quiet life with their baby Stella until the Delta Psi Beta (ΔΨΒ) student association moved into the neighboring house . The young parents fear sleepless nights from the party-mad students. Not without good reason, because the previous booth caught fire and burned down at a party. The liaison president Teddy Sanders also plans to immortalize himself on the roll of honor with a really spectacular party. In an initial conversation, Mac and Kelly ask not to be too loud. After the opening ceremony, in which the Radners take part as guests, it is agreed not to notify the police in the event of problems, but to seek direct discussion.

But soon the night comes when repeated calls are of no use and Mac contacts the police by phone. The students take revenge for this breach of the agreement with various pranks and extra loud parties. In addition, the garbage is thrown in the couple's garden, which means that Stella comes into contact with a condom . In the course of a complaint to the responsible dean Gladstone, they only learn that the university only hated negative headlines and that the connection would not be closed until the third. The fire was the first.

First, Mac tries to drive the students away through a "burst water pipe" that he created. But they not only drive up the repair costs by selling self-made dildos , they can also have a pool built in the garden.

Then Kelly comes up with the idea of dividing the students among themselves through discord. It is planned that there will be a breach of trust between Teddy and his deputy Pete Regazolli by violating the fraternal code of honor. Under the pretext of wanting to resolve the war, Kelly and Mac go with his colleagues Jimmy Faldt and the next party where reached his ex-wife Paula Kelly with plenty of liquor that Pete with Teddy's girlfriend goes into the bedroom where Teddy them in flagrante surprised. In the brawl that followed, a barrel-shaped grill rolled onto the street, was hit by a car and injured a passing professor. This gives the hoped-for second negative headline. The dean puts the student union “on probation” until the end of the semester, which is why the group has to forego loud parties. Teddy forgives Pete, for whom the professional future is more important than Delta Psi Beta.

The next task is to uncover the practices used to humiliate newcomers to the association. To do this, Mac and Kelly persuade one of them, called "Arschsaft" (Assjuice), to get video evidence with camera glasses. But this informant is not reliable and tells Teddy everything. Then the actions of the students against the family begin to become brutal. They even achieve a brief separation of the spouses.

You decide to get the third negative headline by believing the connection is supposed to be safe. With a forged letter from Jimmy, in which the dean allegedly lifts the parole, they get Teddy and Pete to arrange a big graduation party. Mac, Kelly and their friends invite additional guests on their own, so that as many people as possible appear that night. The plan succeeds at first, but shortly before the police arrive, the students discover the forgery of the letter and break off the celebration in time. Teddy immediately deactivates the main switch of the house and thus the music and lighting system and sends the party guests away. However, the Radners manage to break into the house, shoot down fireworks on the police patrol and turn the main switch back on. Jimmy even throws himself off the first floor of the house as a distraction. As a result, the house is cleared by the police, Teddy arrested and the connection finally closed. Teddy takes responsibility and sends Pete away so as not to endanger his career.

Jimmy and Paula get back together during the action and decide they want to have a child too. Due to a lack of success at the university, Teddy works as a topless model at Abercrombie & Fitch and Mac and Kelly can calmly devote themselves to family life again.

criticism

The film achieved a rating of 6.3 out of 10 stars in the IMDb (from 279,366 ratings on July 13, 2020). On Metacritic  he has a Metascore of 68 out of 100 possible points. The editorial team of Filmstarts.de awarded 3.5 stars out of 5.

The critics atquote meter say: "Taking into account the expectations of 'Bad Neighbors' - trailers and advertising campaigns say nothing more and nothing less than a comedy that relies on a lot of slapstick and situation comedy - the film does everything it should in its genre to pass. A [n] drew J. Cohen and Brandon O'Brien […] set a very high pace and are particularly convincing in terms of dynamics; both among the individual actors and in the course of the story. In addition, director Nicholas Stoller lets a lot happen on screen. When the plot is not making any script-related jumps, Stoller's staging is convincing with its exuberant images and visual humor. […] Many of the gags are new and in the form presented here are actually really funny - […] at the same time the script suffers from the weakly written characters. Conclusion: 'Bad Neighbors' has the good gags to work as a comedy. Unfortunately, the starting position loses its appeal faster than the trailers announced in advance. "

Rupert Koppold at the Stuttgarter Zeitung writes: “For a nonsense comedy, 'Bad Neighbors' is a really smart topic. What do people do who have just defined themselves about their desire for partying when they become parents - and the partying next door wakes the baby? "

Kino.de comes to the verdict: “Funny as hell, this insane guerrilla war in which there can be no winner. Comedy expert Nicholas Stoller […] pulls off a ravishingly escalating number revue. The pace of the extended battle between Seth Rogen […] and Zac Efron […], which was fought with all available means, is extremely high, the gags are on, and in between there is still room for one or the other clever thought.
