Early life and background

Samberg was born on August 18, 1978 in Berkeley, California. His mother, "Margi" (Marrow), is a primary school teacher and his father, Joe, is a photographer. He has two sisters, Johanna and Darrow. At the age of 5, he told his parents that he wanted to change his name to Andy. Samberg grew up in a Jewish family and describes himself as not particularly religious.

In a 2019 episode of Finding Your Roots , hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. , Samberg discovered that his mother, Marjorie, who was adopted by Jewish parents, was the biological daughter of a 1925 Sicilian father (Salvatore Maida) and a German - is a Jewish refugee mother (Ellen Philipsborn) who fled to the USA in 1938; they met in San Francisco . Samberg's adoptive grandfather was the industrial psychologist and Jewish philanthropist Alfred J. Marrow . Through him he met his cousin, Tammy Baldwin , who is part of the US Senate.

Samberg attended elementary school with future Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star, Chelsea Peretti . He discovered Saturday Night Live as a child when he snuck past his parents to see professional wrestling on television. He was obsessed with the show and his devotion to comedy was frustrating for the teachers as they felt like he was distracted from his homework. Samberg graduated from Berkeley High School in 1996 where he became interested in creative writing. He attended college at the University of California, Santa Cruz for two years before moving to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University , where he graduated in 2000. The writer Murray Miller was his roommate.
