Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin (born February 11, 1962 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1999 to 2013 she was a member of the United States House of Representatives , where she represented Wisconsin's second congressional constituency . She was elected US Senator for her state in 2012 and has been the first openly gay member of the United States Senate since taking office on January 3, 2013.

Life

Baldwin was born in Madison and grew up with her mother, Pamela Green, daughter of the biochemist David E. Green . She graduated in 1980 at the Madison West High School , graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor degree the Smith College and acquired in 1989 the Juris Doctor at the University of Wisconsin Law School . From 1989 to 1992 she worked as a lawyer.

Baldwin lives with her partner Lauren Azar. As the first and so far only member of the US Senate, she is openly gay; in the US House of Representatives she was one of three (alongside Barney Frank from Massachusetts and Jared Polis from Colorado ).

The actor Andy Samberg is her third cousin.

Political career

A political choice won Baldwin first time in 1986 when it to the Board of Supervisors of the Dane County was chosen. She was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 1999. In 1998 she became the first woman from the state of Wisconsin to be elected to the United States House of Representatives and was confirmed in office every two years (most recently in November 2010 with 61.7 percent of the vote). There she was a member of the Committee on Energy and Trade and the Justice Committee . Within her group she was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and voted in 2002 as one of 133 members of the House against the Iraq war.

In 2012 she ran for the US Senate, prevailed against her Republican opponent Tommy Thompson and, on January 3, 2013, became the first woman to represent Wisconsin in the United States Senate.
