Jerry Kleczka

Gerald Daniel "Jerry" Kleczka (born November 26, 1943 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ; † October 8, 2017 in Madison , Wisconsin) was an American politician . Between 1984 and 2005 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jerry Kleczka attended Don Bosco High School in Milwaukee until 1961 and then studied with interruptions until 1970 at the University of Wisconsin there . Between 1963 and 1969 he was a member of the Air Corps of the National Guard in his home state. At times he also worked as an accountant.

Politically, Kleczka joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1969 to 1974 ; between 1975 and 1984 he was a member of the State Senate . He was also a delegate to all regional Democratic party conventions in Wisconsin from 1966 to 1984. In 1980 and 1984 he was also a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

After the death of Congressman Clement J. Zablocki , Kleczka was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due for the fourth seat of Wisconsin , where he took up his new mandate on April 3, 1984. After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2005 . There he was first a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and later the Budget Committee . He also made negative headlines in 1995 when he was jailed for a week for drunk driving.

In 2004 Kleczka announced his retirement from politics. He decided not to run again in this year's elections.
