Samuel D. Burchard

Samuel Dickinson Burchard (born July 17, 1836 in Leyden , Lewis County , New York , †  September 1, 1901 in Greenwood , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1845, Samuel Burchard moved to Beaver Dam , Wisconsin with his father . He soon returned to New York State, where he studied in Hamilton at Madison University , now Colgate University . After graduating, Burchard worked in Beaver Dam in wool processing. During the civil war he was a soldier in the Union Army . At the end of the war he made it to a major.

Politically, Burchard was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1872 and 1874 he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . In the congressional election of 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Charles A. Eldredge on March 4, 1875 . Until March 3, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Burchard withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked in agriculture. He died in Greenwood on September 1, 1901.
