James S. Brown

James Sproat Brown (born February 1, 1824 in Hampden , Penobscot County , Maine , †  April 15, 1878 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician .

Brown moved to Cincinnati , Ohio in 1840 . He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1843. From 1844 he practiced in Milwaukee , Wisconsin . Brown was elected Attorney General of Milwaukee County in 1846 and was Attorney General of Wisconsin in 1848 and 1849 . In 1861 he held the office of Mayor of Milwaukee .

Brown was elected a Democrat in Congress and represented the state of Wisconsin from March 4, 1863 to March 3, 1865 in the US House of Representatives . After an unsuccessful candidacy for re-election in 1864 and his departure from the House of Representatives, Brown traveled to Europe in 1865 to restore his troubled health. In 1873 he returned to the United States and began practicing again in Milwaukee. Brown died in Chicago in 1878 and was buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee.
