Thomas Mark "Tom" Barrett (born December 8, 1953 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Barrett has served as mayor of his hometown Milwaukee since 2004 .

Barrett studied at the University of Wisconsin at Madison , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1976 . In 1980 he received his Juris Doctor from the University's Law School . From 1980 to 1982 Barrett served as an assistant ( law clerk ) to Judge Robert W. Warren , who served on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin . After that, Barrett made as a lawyer independently .

He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1984 and served until 1989. Already in 1982 had run unsuccessfully for a seat in the Assembly. Barrett then served as a Senator in the Wisconsin Senate from 1989 to 1993 .

In 1992 he was elected a Democrat to Congress , where he represented the state of Wisconsin in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2003 . In 2002 he did not stand for re-election, but tried to be set up as a democratic candidate for the gubernatorial elections. Here he was subject to Jim Doyle .

Barrett has served as Mayor of Milwaukee since 2004 . In 2008 he was re-elected. In November 2009, Barrett announced that he would run for governor of Wisconsin in 2010 . In this election, however, he was defeated by Republican Scott Walker with a 46.6 percent share of the vote . In the summer of 2012 there was a recall against Governor Walker , with the Democrats nominating Barrett again. Walker survived this election and was able to beat Barrett again. In the 2014 gubernatorial election, Barrett turned down a new candidacy.
