Clinton Babbitt

Clinton Babbitt (born November 16, 1831 in Westmoreland , Cheshire County , New Hampshire , †  March 11, 1907 in Beloit , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clinton Babbitt attended his home public schools and Keene Academy . In 1853 he moved to Wisconsin, where he settled near Beloit in Rock County . There he worked in agriculture. At the same time, Babbitt began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . His first political office was that of a local council in his new home town of Beloit. In 1880 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. Between 1886 and 1889 he was a postman in Beloit and from 1885 to 1899, also during his time in Congress, he was Secretary of the Agricultural Society of Wisconsin.

In the congressional election of 1890 Babbitt was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Lucien B. Caswell on March 4, 1891 . Since he was defeated by Republican Henry A. Cooper in the elections of 1892 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Clinton Babbitt retired from public life, which he spent in Beloit. He died there on March 11, 1907.
