Robert Walter "Bob" Kasten Jr. (born June 19, 1942 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is a former American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Wisconsin in both houses of Congress .

Bob Kasten attended as a teenager, the Choate Rosemary Hall , a private school in Wallingford ( Connecticut ), in which he reached his 1960 high school graduation. In 1964, he graduated from the University of Arizona at Tucson ; two years later he earned a degree from Columbia Business School in New York City . From 1966 to 1972 he served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard .

On November 7, 1972, the day Richard Nixon was sustained as President of the United States , Kasten won the election to Wisconsin State Senator . Two years later he won the election in the 9th  Congressional District of the state, whereupon he moved into the House of Representatives of the United States on January 3, 1975 ; In 1976 he was confirmed in office. In 1978, his application for the post of governor of Wisconsin was unsuccessful when he lost the Republican primary to the eventual winner Lee S. Dreyfus .

In 1980, Kasten then stood in the US Senate election against the Democratic incumbent Gaylord Nelson , whom he defeated with 50.2 percent of the vote. In this election he benefited from the trend in favor of the Republicans, whose candidate Ronald Reagan won the presidential election at the same time . He was the first Republican Senator from Wisconsin since Alexander Wiley left office in 1963.

Kasten, part of the conservative wing of his party in the Senate, was re-elected in 1986, with 50.9 percent again barely succeeding against the Democrat Ed Garvey . In 1992 he finally had a share of 46 percent and had to hand over his mandate to Russ Feingold on January 3, 1993 . He was no longer politically active and became president of his own consulting firm called Kasten & Company . In the run-up to the 2008 presidential election , it was announced that Kasten would be a member of Rudolph Giuliani's campaign team as a foreign policy advisor; it was also intended that he would lead the election campaign in Wisconsin. However, after his defeat in Florida , Giuliani did not even compete in the primary elections in Wisconsin.
