Political career

Johnson ran against the Democratic mandate holder Russ Feingold in the 2010 election to the United States Senate in the state of Wisconsin . In a generally favorable climate for the Republicans, Johnson won against Feingold and took over his seat on January 3, 2011. In the 2016 Senate election , Feingold faced Johnson again. Contrary to the expectations of many political observers, who saw Johnson as one of the most vulnerable senators in this election, Johnson was confirmed in his mandate, which runs until January 3, 2023.

Positions

Johnson sees no connection between human behavior and global warming, contrary to the current state of scientific knowledge. He rejects the introduction of general public health insurance. Johnson rejects abortion ( Pro Life ), except in the case of rape, incest or endangerment of the mother's health. He rejects stem cell research.

He supports the right to bear arms.

In the fall of 2017, Johnson advocated a change in the planned Republican tax reform. In his opinion, the previous plans have disproportionately little relief for smaller companies compared to large corporations. The Washington Post attributes Johnson's rejection to the fact that he was already considered hopeless during his Senate election campaign in 2016 and had received no more funds from the federal party, which is why he no longer owes them loyalty.

The hearings for an impeachment case against President Trump revealed that Johnson belongs to the narrow circle of those who should put the Ukrainian president under pressure.

In August 2020, Johnson, together with Senators Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz, sent the managing directors of Mukran Port Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH a letter threatening them with massive sanctions due to the Nord Stream project .
