United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs

The United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is a standing committee of the US Senate .

The Committee is responsible for the work of the Department of Homeland Security (Department of Homeland Security) to monitor and functioning of the executive branch itself. This includes the National Archives , the budget, if it does not involve investments (appropriations) , the censuses , federal employees, the District of Columbia, and the United States Postal Service .

history

The committee was originally set up to make the internal work of the government easier to monitor for the Senate and to give the Senate the opportunity to investigate possible misconduct efficiently. This task was added in 2005 with the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security .

Subcommittees

There are six sub-committees, with the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations having existed since 1952. This subcommittee is permanent, but only comes into action sporadically. Having a broad mandate and rights to investigate government and government institutions, it has consistently been a valuable tool in the hands of individual leaders; the best known was Joseph McCarthy , who conducted his investigations within this committee.
