James Paul Lankford (born March 4, 1968 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American politician . Since 2015 he has represented the state of Oklahoma in the US Senate ; he had previously been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 2011 .

Career

James Lankford studied at the University of Texas at Austin until 1990 . In 1994 he graduated from the Southwestern Theological Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth . He then worked for the Baptist Church . Between 1996 and 2009, he was the director of the Church Youth Camp at Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center in Oklahoma. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the 2010 congressional election , Lankford was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Oklahoma , where he succeeded Mary Fallin, who was elected governor , on January 3, 2011 . There he was a member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform . He was also a member of five sub-committees. In the 2012 congressional elections , Lankford prevailed with 59:37 percent of the vote against the Democrat Tom Guild.

In November 2014, Lankford ran in a special election to the United States Senate. This was made necessary by the announced assumption of Republican Senator Tom Coburn . In the primary of his party, Lankford won an absolute majority with 56 percent of the vote. In Republican Oklahoma, he was the clear favorite for the Senate seat. Ultimately, he was also able to win safely against the Democratic State Senator Connie Johnson and move to the Senate on January 3, 2015 within Congress . He was confirmed in office in the Senate election on November 8, 2016 ; the term of office of US senators is six years.

Lankford and his wife Cindy have two daughters.
