Donald "Don" Lee Nickles (born December 6, 1948 in Ponca City , Oklahoma ) is an American politician and businessman .

Life

After finishing school in Oklahoma, Nickles studied economics at Oklahoma State University . After graduating, he worked for the Nickles Machine Corporation in Ponca City, founded by his grandfather in 1918 . He rose to become Vice President of the company.

Nickles is a member of the Republican Party . From 1978 to 1980 Nickles was a member of the Oklahoma Senate . From January 5, 1981 to January 3, 2005, Nickles served as the successor to Henry Bellmon Senator in the United States Senate . He was succeeded as senator by the Republican politician Tom Coburn . After serving as a Senator, Nickles returned to the private sector and served on various corporate boards including Chesapeake Energy and Valero Energy .

Nickles is married to Linda Nickles and has four children. He is a member of the Catholic Church.
