history
The city was founded in 1883 under the name New Ponca . The name goes back to the Indian people of the Ponca . Because of the proximity to the Arkansas River, the place was very attractive, and immigrants came to the area, as the region with the Cherokee Outlet was opened for settlement. The place experienced a further boom after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway passed nearby. In 1913 the place changed its name to "Ponca City". When oil was found in boreholes in the area, founded the of Pennsylvania native EW Marland , the Marland Oil Company , promoted soon large amounts of oil and a petroleum refinery built. In the 1920s, Ponca City experienced its heyday due to the oil boom. The Marland Oil Company was taken over in 1928 by the Continental Oil and Transportation Company (Conoco), which moved its headquarters to Ponca City. After another merger with the Phillips Petroleum Company to form ConocoPhillips in 2002, the new company is based in Houston , Texas . In 2009, ConocoPhillips announced that some of those not employed in the refinery would be relocated to other company locations. Although the refinery is still in operation, individual parts, for example the associated Fluid Catalytic Cracker, can be temporarily taken out of operation depending on the current market and price situation for refined products. Opposite the refinery is the Conoco Museum , opened in 2007 , in which historical documents and objects of the oil industry and the cultural development of Oklohomas are shown.
