Joel Sartore

Joel Sartore (born June 16, 1962 in Ponca City , Oklahoma ) is an American photojournalist , wildlife photographer and conservationist . His trademark are portraits of endangered species, which he mainly does for the National Geographic Society .

Life

Sartore is the son of John Edward and Sharon Lee Sartore, nee Meese. He grew up in Ralston , Nebraska . His interest in nature was aroused when he learned something about the last passenger pigeon from a Time-Life book written by his mother . In 1985 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln . In the same year he married Kathleen Louise Vestecka. The couple have three children and live in Lincoln , Nebraska.

Sartore has been a freelance nature photographer since 1991. He began with assignments for National Geographic which allowed him to document firsthand the effects of humans on the environment. In addition to his work for National Geographic, Sartore has contributed to Audubon Magazine, GEO, Time, Life, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and numerous book projects.

Sartore has appeared on several television shows, including National Geographic Explorer , NBC Nightly News , NPR Weekend Edition, and the PBS productions At Close Range and RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark . He appeared on Charles Osgood's Sunday Morning Show on CBS and in 2015 he appeared in the movie Racing Extinction where he photographed Toughie , the last specimen of Rabbs' fringed-toe tree frog ( Ecnomiohyla rabborum ), which became extinct in 2016 .

Joel Sartore is a member of the National Press Photographers Association and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). In 2012 Sartore was elected a Fellow of the National Geographic Society.
