Toughie in the hand of an Atlanta Botanical Garden keeper

Toughie († September 26, 2016) was the last known living specimen of the species Ecnomiohyla rabborum . The animal was kept in the so-called FrogPOD , a secure and non-public area of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens .

Well-known life story

This specimen, a fully grown male, was caught during an expedition into the rainforest of central Panama in 2005 . Since then he has been nursed in Atlanta. Remaining known conspecifics died in 2009 (the last female) and 2013 (the penultimate male), so that Toughie was the last known specimen after a last unsuccessful attempt at reproduction (the tadpoles died before the metamorphosis). On September 26, 2016, he was found dead by his caretaker.

In 2013 it was featured in a National Geographic documentary about the frogs of the Botanical Gardens and in 2015 in the documentary Racing Extinction .
