Kay County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Newkirk .

geography

The county is located in northern Oklahoma, bordering Kansas and has an area of ​​2,448 square kilometers, of which 68 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cowley County, Kansas, Osage County , Noble County , Garfield County, and Grant County .

history

Kay County was formed in 1895 as the original county from parts of the Oklahoma Territory. It was named after its old name, K County. The county was settled by white settlers during the fourth official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 16, 1893.

There are three National Historic Landmarks in the county , Miller Brothers 101 Ranch , Deer Creek Site, and EW Marland Mansion . 38 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Kay County had 48,080 people in 19,157 households and 13,141 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.16 percent white, 1.79 percent African American, 7.53 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.98 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.00 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 89.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,762 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,144. Males had a median income of $ 30,431 versus $ 19,617 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,643. 12.4 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
