Woodward County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Woodward .

The county is located in northwest Oklahoma, about 30 km to the north from Kansas , to the west about 35 km from Texas , and has an area of ​​3,227 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Woods County , Major Counties , Dewey County , Ellis County, and Harper Counties . Alabaster Caverns State Park is in Woodward County .

history

Woodward County was formed in 1893 as the original Cherokee County . It was named after a station of the Santa Fe Railway Company , which was named after one of its directors, BW Woodward . The county was settled by white settlers during the fourth official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 16, 1893.

Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 7, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Woodward County had 18,486 people in 7,141 households and 5,077 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.23 percent white, 1.10 percent African American, 2.07 percent Native American, 0.48 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.5 percent came from others ethnic groups, and 1.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.85 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,141 households, 33.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers. 28.9 percent were not families, 25.4 percent were single households, and 11.2 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.96 people.

25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 100.5 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 33,581 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,916. Males had a median income of $ 28,750 versus $ 19,756 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,734. 8.7 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
