Johnston County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Tishomingo .

The county is located in southern Oklahoma, about 30 km from Texas and has an area of 1,705 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pontotoc County , Coal County , Atoka County , Bryan County , Marshall County , Carter County, and Murray County .

history

Johnston County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Chickasaw Land. It was named after Douglas H. Johnston , a governor of the Chickasaw.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 2, 2018).

The racial the population was composed of 76.09 percent white, 1.66 percent African American, 15.32 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
