Johnston County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Tishomingo .

The county is located in southern Oklahoma, about 30 km from Texas and has an area of 1,705 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pontotoc County , Coal County , Atoka County , Bryan County , Marshall County , Carter County, and Murray County .
history
Johnston County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Chickasaw Land. It was named after Douglas H. Johnston , a governor of the Chickasaw.
Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Johnston County had 10,513 people in 4,057 households and 2,900 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.09 percent white, 1.66 percent African American, 15.32 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,057 households, 31.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers. 28.5 percent were not families, 25.2 percent were single households and 12.2 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.02 people.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 25.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 94.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,592 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,292. Males had a median income of $ 25,240 versus $ 19,868 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,747. 17.8 percent of families and 22.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
