Nowata County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Nowata .

The county is located in northeast Oklahoma, borders Kansas to the north and has an area of ​​1,504 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Montgomery County, Kansas, Labette County, Kansas, Craig County , Rogers County, and Washington Counties .

history

Nowata County was formed from Cherokee Country on July 16, 1907 as the original county . It was named after the district capital Nowata. The word is Delaware and means "welcome".

As of the 2000 census , Nowata County had 10,569 people in 4,147 households and 2,989 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.43 percent white, 2.46 percent African American, 16.56 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups; 8.17 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.23 percent of the population.

Of the 4,147 households, 31.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers. 27.9 percent were not families, 25.5 percent were single households, and 13.3 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 93.2 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,470 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,354. Males had a median income of $ 27,047 versus $ 19,371 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,244. 9.0 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
