Jefferson County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Waurika .

The county is located in southern Oklahoma, bordering Texas and has an area of ​​2004 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stephens County , Carter County , Love County , Montague County, Texas, Clay County, Texas, and Cotton County .

history

Jefferson County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of Comanche County and Oklahoma Territory. It was named after the third US President, Thomas Jefferson .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 6,818 people in 2,716 households and 1,863 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.14 percent white, 0.69 percent African American, 5.24 percent Native American, 1.13 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.92 percent were descended from two or more races.
