Washita County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Cordell .

The county is located in west central Oklahoma, about 60 km from Texas and has an area of ​​2,613 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Custer County , Caddo County , Kiowa County, and Beckham County .

history

Washita County was formed on April 19, 1892 as the original county from Cheyenne Country and was given its current name in 1900. It was named after the Washita River . The county was settled by white settlers during the third official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 19, 1892.

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the McLemore Site archeological site . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 7, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Washita County had 11,508 people in 4,506 households and 3,266 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.31 percent white, 0.43 percent African American, 2.97 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.48 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,563 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,598. Males had a median income of $ 25,668 versus $ 17,741 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,528. 13.1 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
