Harmon County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Hollis .

The county is located in the extreme southwest of Oklahoma, borders Texas to the west and south, and has an area of ​​1,395 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Beckham County , Greer County , Jackson County , in Texas by the following counties: Hardeman County , Childress County, and Collingsworth Counties .

history

Harmon County was formed in 1909 from parts of Greer County and Jackson County. It was named after Judson Harmon , a lawyer, US attorney general, Ohio governor, and presidential candidate.

Four buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 31, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Harmon County had 3,283 people in 1,266 households and 863 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.65 percent white, 9.78 percent African American, 1.13 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 14.32 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.92 percent were descended from two or more races. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 89.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 22,365 , and the median income for a family was $ 29,063. Males had a median income of $ 21,530 versus $ 16,658 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,464. 23.5 percent of families and 29.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
