The Dewey County is a county in the state of Oklahoma of the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 4,810 people and a population density of 1.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Taloga .

history

George Dewey

Dewey County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1892. The county was settled by white settlers during the third official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 19, 1892. In the same year, the first post office was opened. It was named after Admiral George Dewey .

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 29, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Dewey County had 4,743 people in 1,962 households and 1,336 families. The population density was 1.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.16 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 4.64 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.72 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.28 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,172 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,114. Males had a median income of $ 26,675 versus $ 18,548 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,806. 11.4 percent of families and 15.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
