The Dewey County is a county in the state of Oklahoma of the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 4,810 people and a population density of 1.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Taloga .

The county is located in northwest Oklahoma, is about 60 km from Texas in the west and has an area of 2,611 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Dewey County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1892. The county was settled by white settlers during the third official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 19, 1892. In the same year, the first post office was opened. It was named after Admiral George Dewey .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 29, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Dewey County had 4,743 people in 1,962 households and 1,336 families. The population density was 1.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.16 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 4.64 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.72 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.28 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.68 percent of the population.
Of the 1,962 households, 26.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 5.0 percent were single mothers. 31.9 percent were not families, 30.0 percent were single households and 16.4 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.93.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 91.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,172 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,114. Males had a median income of $ 26,675 versus $ 18,548 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,806. 11.4 percent of families and 15.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
