Le Flore County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Poteau .

The county is located in eastern Oklahoma, bordering Arkansas, and has an area of ​​4,165 square kilometers, of which 58 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Sequoyah County , Sebastian County, Arkansas, Scott County, Arkansas, Polk County (Arkansas), McCurtain County , Pushmataha County , Latimer County, and Haskell County .

history

Le Flore County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Choctaw Land. It was named after Thomas Le Flore .

According to the 2000 census , Le Flore County had 48,109 people in 17,861 households and 13,199 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.35 percent white, 2.21 percent African American, 10.72 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.03 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.84 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 97.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,278 , and the median income for a family was $ 32,603. Males had a median income of $ 26,214 versus women of $ 19,792. The per capita income was $ 13,737. 15.4 percent of families and 19.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
