Sebastian County was formed on January 10, 1851 from parts of Crawford County, Polk County, Scott County and Van Buren County. It was named after William K. Sebastian , an early Arkansas judge and US Senator .
The first European in this area was arguably Hernando de Soto when he was exploring southeast America.
In 1875, Judge Isaac Charles Parker was appointed president of the Fort Smith area and succeeded William Story as he was convicted of corruption. He quickly gained a reputation as a tough judge. He sentenced several people to death on the gallows and earned the nickname Hanging Judge . His influence brought legendary law enforcement officers such as Bass Reeves and Heck Thomas to the area, who also roamed the Indian territory in search of criminals. In the 21 years that he served there, 65 U.S. marshals died while performing their duties. Fort Smith cemented its reputation as the frontier town of the old west during this period.
