Perry County's Age Pyramid (2000)

Perry County was formed on December 18, 1840 from parts of Conway County. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry , a hero in the war of 1812.

The first county courthouse consisted of a log cabin built in 1841 that was destroyed by fire in 1850. The fire was a result of the feud between the Lively and McCool families . Another log house served this purpose until the planned construction of a new courthouse. However, the planned new building was destroyed by the outbreak of the Civil War . It was not until 1871 that JLW Matthews donated land for the construction of a new courthouse. This burned down in 1874 and all stored documents were destroyed. The then newly built courthouse was also destroyed by fire in December 1881. The series of incendiaries became known as The Perry County War . In 1888 a brick building was erected that is still in use today.
