The county is located in northeast Arkansas and is about 30 km to the east from the Mississippi River , which forms the border with Tennessee . Poinsett

Poinsett County was formed on February 28, 1838 from parts of Greene County and St. Francis County.

It was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851), a former US  -  Minister of War (1837-1841) and renowned amateur botanist.
