Hot Spring County's age pyramid (as of 2000)

The Hot Spring County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Clark County as the 18th County in Arkansas. It was named after the hot springs located here, which were later used as medicinal springs. Ironically, the hot springs are no longer within county boundaries.

First county seat was in Hot Springs. In 1844 it became Rockport. In 1866 the two-story County Courthouse was completed, but it was destroyed by fire on January 23, 1873. The Cairo and Fulton Railroad (later Missouri Pacific Railroad ) offered the city of Rockport a connection to its rail network for an investment. When Rockport refused, the railroad moved the rails to Malvern in 1873, which it found more profitable. From now on, Malvern served as a transfer point between the railroad and the stagecoach routes. On October 15, 1878, Malvern was elected to the county seat.
