Grant County was formed on February 4, 1869 from parts of Hot Spring County, Jefferson County and Saline County. It was named after the 18th US President Ulysses S. Grant .

One of the earliest roads in the county was part of the Camden Trail . The western portion of the county was connected to Little Rock and Camden by a truckable road . There were five ferries to cross the river.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census , Grant County had 16,464 people in 6,241 households and 4,780 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.55 percent white, 2.47 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races.
