The county is located in southwest Arkansas, borders Louisiana to the south , is about 30 km from Texas to the west and has an area of 1,412 square kilometers, 48 square kilometers of which are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

Lafayette County was formed on October 15, 1827 from parts of Hempstead County.
It was named after the Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834), a French politician and general who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonists' side and also played an important role in the French Revolution .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Lafayette County had 7,645 people in 3,130 households. The population density was 5.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 60.7 percent white, 37.2 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.7 percent of the population.
Statistically, there were 2.45 people each in the 3,130 households.
21.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.3 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.
