The county is located in east central Arkansas and has an area of 1,750 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

The Prairie County was formed on November 25, 1846 from parts of Monroe County and Pulaski County. It was named after the characteristic prairie land across the county.

According to the 2000 census , Prairie County had 9,539 people in 3,894 households and 2,795 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.83 percent white, 13.71 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.81 percent of the population.
