Lonoke County was formed on April 16, 1873 from Prairie County and Pulaski County. The county is the only one in Arkansas whose county capital bears the same name as the county itself. It was named after a railroad surveyor who used a massive, ancient red oak as a reference point for his survey.

Demographic data

As of the 2000 census , Lonoke County had 52,828 people in 19,262 households and 15,024 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer.
