Newton County was formed on December 14, 1842 from parts of Carroll County. It was named after Thomas W. Newton (1804-1853), a senator in Arkansas (1844-1848) and a short-term member of the US House of Representatives (1847).

The first school was established in Mount Judea in 1860. In 1886 the Western Grove Academy was added.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Newton County had 8,330 people in 3,527 households. The population density was 3.9 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 96.1 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.7 percent of the population.

Statistically, 2.35 people lived in each of the 3,527 households.

20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.9 percent were 65 years or older. 49.2 percent of the population was female.
