history
Jackson County was formed on November 5, 1829 from parts of Independence County. It was named after Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the seventh President of the USA (1829-1837).
The district capital has changed five times. In detail these were: Litchfield (1831), Elizabeth (1839), Augusta (1852), Jacksonport (1854) and Newport from 1892.
Since there were no independent parishes or towns at the time the county was formed, the first county seat was established in the home of early pioneer Thomas Wideman. The house was almost in the center of the county. In 1832 they moved to the newly built Litchfield, 3 km away, which was the first permanent settlement. The place was named after Thomas Litchfield, a former member of the General Assembly of Independence County.
In 1836 the first ferry across the Black River was opened by Robert Dunbar.
In January 1998, Arkansas opened two high-security prisons in Newport. The Scott Grimes Correctional Facility for young men and the Ronald McPherson Correctional Facility for women, with a total capacity of 1,700 inmates.
